The Travel Clinic - Frequently Asked Questions

  • We would prefer anytime before 4-6 weeks prior to departure. We can see travellers closer to the date but they may not be able to complete their whole course of vaccines before leaving. We will organise to complete these on return, but vaccine coverage for the trip may be affected.

  • You will receive an email from our reception staff which will ask you about your current travel plans and previous travel and personal medical history. We appreciate you completing this form as quickly as possible as this will allow us to formulate your personal travel recommendations. • A single traveller consultation is 30 minutes with the doctor and then time with the nurse after to vaccinate and work through any additional travel medications. Allow 1-1.5 hours in total at the practice.

Families or multiple travellers to the same destination will usually be booked for between 45-60minutes in total with the doctor depending on the number of travellers, and then time with the nurse. Allow 1.5-2 hours in total at the practice.

Return visits to complete courses of vaccinations are usually only 15 minutes or less.

  • We provide a complete travel assessment to all travellers regardless of previous advice. Having a special interest in travel medicine means we review the travellers requirements in depth. Often we will find there may be gaps in treatment plans (suggested vaccines, medications, and health issue management), necessitating the doctor to convert from a single vaccine consult to a full appointment which is difficult to fit in to the allotted time or may need a return visit (for which there may not be enough time to book before departure, or can’t be accommodated by our doctors). We therefore book all appointments as full travel consultations.

  • If the traveller has a letter of referral from their doctor stating their medical conditions and allergies, and that they require no other advice or treatment and only vaccination for Yellow Fever, our doctors can review the patient for vaccination in a single immunisation appointment. There is no other advice given and if anything else is required the traveller will need to return for another appointment.

  • Generally as destination requirements can vary significantly, a full consultation is required mostly to assess vaccination requirements and review health advise for the destination. If it has been less than three years since the last travel to a similar destination type, a consultation my only need 15 minutes with the doctor to review and update letters and vaccination requirements but 30 minutes will be put aside for good measure. If longer periods of time have elapsed between travel, often there will be a number of boosters required so expect 30 minutes with the doctor.

  • Yes, travel consultations for personal travel are rebateable by Medicare. TSMP charges an out-of-pocket fee for the appointment and your Medicare rebate will be returned to you as it would in a normal consultation.

Vaccinations are not covered by Medicare and are fully private. You can however claim some of your vaccine costs from your health fund depending on your cover.

  • Yes, if there are special requirement vaccines which are not easily accessible such as Tick-borne Encephalitis, we can order this through the specialised s100 application through the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Please allow 8-12 weeks for this to be organised, payment for the vaccine will need to be made upon ordering and may include other charges such as delivery costs.

  • We can organise corporate occupational or travel assessments to overseas destinations via our Corporate team. We can accommodate multiple employees at the practice, or for bulk occupational vaccinations we can vaccinate on site. Please call our Corporate team on 07 4426 3636 or email corporate@tsmp.net.
